Mist and Fog

November 09, 2015 in Blog, Landscape

Mist and fog are always my good friends in Landscape photography. Mist and fog can change the whole landscape entirely, it happened when the temperature drop or humid air cools rapidly, for example when the air comes into contact with surfaces that are much cooler than the air. In Malaysia because of the geographical location, is not easy to see mist or fog in the morning, normally it only happen on higher ground, especially after some rain. I have spend quite a lot of time on this mist and fog album, I have to take the chance when it rain over night. The best place for me to see it is on either Penang Hill or Air Itam Dam. because they are on the higher ground.

To make the mist move like a silk I have to shoot in longer exposure, if the light is low enough I might get 30s of exposure without the help of ND filter, but if the light not allow, I have to put on my Lee Big Stopper to slower down the exposure time.  You might able to control your shutter more than 30sec if you shoot with a cable release.

The following 2 scene were capture just after the rain in Air itam Water Dam, sometime I have to shoot under the rain to get the best result. This kind of mist only appear if there are long hours of rain, often it only appear in the raining season.

Another good place to see the mist is on the Penang Hill, because of the altitude so it got better chances compare to many parts of Penang. I visit the place when after the rain, the best shooting period is around Aug to December.
